The Funny Research on OLQE
When I decided to begin the journey of passing the oversea lawyer qualification examination, firstly I found a preparation course that was popular in mainland China. It costs HK$30000. As per my request, an assistant teacher sent me a trial video of the course with a bilingual teacher who can speak Chinses and English. Due to her Chinese skill obviously being better than English, the class mainly lectured in Chinese. Although Chinese is my mother tongue and I will learn faster with the familiar language, I refused to register as their student, cause OLQE is an English exam. If I learned professional vocabulary with the wrong accent, I must pay double the time to fix it. It’s frustrating and time-consuming. So that I checked the Q&A provided by the bar of Hong Kong. They recommended 3 institutes, two of them are teaching in English and the last one is bilingual. The funny thing is the English class is far cheaper than the bilingual class. I think I realized something that I didn’t grasp before. The price of goods depends on supplies and needs. When needs exceed supplies, the price goes high. It’s the core motto of the market. That means bilingual classes are more popular than English classes in the market. Why is that? Why students don’t prefer English classes as me?
I reckon that the needs are higher in mainland China other than in any country and their official language is Chinese(simplified). This phenomenon connects to the market status of Hong Kong. Although Hong Kong is an important financial center of east Asia, mostly its status derived from cooperation with mainland China. In the last 30 years, Hong Kong bridged China with the western world. Even now, oversea lawyer identity is more useful for Chinese lawyer who has a need for bilingual course. Eventually, the price of the bilingual class is higher than the other.
Even though the English course is not easy for me, I still insist on learning law in English and of course, money saving. Excellent!
