Charlie was stoking the fire when his dad called him into the kitchen for a family meeting. He was stoked to hear what it was about, but he kept in mind that it had been a long time since any family meeting had been held.
When he arrived, each of his family members were gathered around the table. His father began by introducing the new late night curfew infraction policy. Any family member who broke the rules would be pigeonholed, and any repeat offenders would be subject to a veto from all other members of the family.
The idea of a vote seemed to galvanize each of them so his dad suggested a one-off balloting session after dinner, to decide on an appropriate punishment as an appetizer. Everyone nod in agreement and begin to savor the savory smells emanating from the kitchen.
But then his younger brother spoke up, saying that he wanted to look at the issue under the hood before they consigned anyone to a punishment. They all looked at each other, confounded. Then Charlie suggested they go around the room, discussing the infraction and possible punishments in an effort to illuminate the situation.
The discussion went on for some time and eventually, it became clear that the culprit was his younger brother. As soon as this news broke, his brother sunk into a desponding state. Charlie spoke up once more, suggesting that instead of a punishment, his brother should scrap his plans and stay home.
His parents were hesitant, but Charlie said that since the incident had only been a one-off, they could trust his brother to not break the curfew again. With that, his father gave his consent, and his brother's gallbladder was saved—at least for now.
