Hundred-stride Riptide (First of the Twain)

长洪斗落生跳波，轻舟南下如投梭。

Amid breaking waves rolling down a sheer drop,

A southbound canoe floundered around like a shuttle dumped.

水师绝叫凫雁起，乱石一线争磋磨。

Startled by the boatman’s frantic yell, a flock of waterfowls flew off.

Through a narrow line clogged by rugged rocks, it struggled its way out.

有如兔走鹰隼落，骏马下注千丈坡。

Like a hare’s swift eluding, an eagle’s abrupt diving;

From the crest of a slope, a sturdy steed makes its long-range raiding.

断弦离柱箭脱手，飞电过隙珠翻荷。

Like a string snapped on a zither, an arrow shot off from a bow;

It’s a glimpse of raindrops tumbling off lotus leaves, or a thunderbolt.

四山眩转风掠耳，但见流沫生千涡。

With the mountains spinning around and the wind sweeping past ears,

I could only see the bubbles floating above thousands of whirlpools.

崄中得乐虽一快，何意水伯夸秋河。*

Sailing in surging tides is indeed a delight,

Yet not much better than the River God’s self-conceit.

我生乘化日夜逝，坐觉一念逾新罗。*

By following the natural law, I do not care time variation;

In an instant, I travel into Silla through Zen meditation.

纷纷争夺醉梦里，岂信荆棘埋铜驼。*

Hustle and bustle of the mortal world is nothing but a fond dream;

Underneath thistles and thornsis the bronze camel, how could they believe?

觉来俯仰失千劫，回视此水殊委蛇。

In just one moment, a thousand realms have collapsed;

Looking back, the torrent seems like still water that runs deep.

君看岩边苍石上，古来篙眼如蜂窠。

We wight as well look at the boulders along riversides,

For centuries they have been honeycombed by punt-poles.

但应此心无所住，造物虽驶如吾何。

If I could hold myself aloof from materials,

Whatever happens, it won’t hurt me at all.

回船上马各归去，多言譊譊师所呵。

By land or water, we had better find our way home;

Alas, my master, for my empty talk I should be to blame.
